The peak-copper wall built entirely of tick marks

A peak-copper bulletin plots 125 years of world copper mining on nine evenly spaced ticks — gaps of 50, 50 and 20 years, then one year five times over. A century of climbing gets squeezed into three tick-gaps while five ordinary years stretch across the rest of the chart as “the wall.” Give every year the same width and the wall shrinks to 4% of the record — and the 2020s turn out to have grown faster than the five years before them.

01The claim

A century of up has ended. From 1900 to 2020 the copper line knew only one direction — a 42× climb — and then the mountain quit: five straight years crawling along the ceiling, and in 2025, growth of exactly zero. The easy copper has been dug. Peak copper is here, and the age of scarcity begins now.

02The trick

Every tonnage on the chart is the USGS’s, printed at every point — the fiction lives in the axis. The nine ticks are spaced evenly, but the first gap holds fifty years, the second fifty, the third twenty — and the last five hold one year each. A line’s slope is change divided by width, and this axis hands out width by whim: 96% of the record is folded into the left three gaps, where the climb can only look vertical, while the last five years — 4% of the record — are stretched across 62% of the chart, where any progress must read as a crawl. The “wall” is the stretching, not the mining: those five “flat” years grew 12%, faster than the five years before them (7%), which the same chart draws inside its golden vertical climb — along with 2016–19, the four genuinely flat years nobody rings in red. Even the +0.0% badge is honest arithmetic on a stitched-up yardstick: 2025 matched 2024 at 23.0 million tons on totals the USGS rounds to the nearest hundred thousand, and the shortfall behind the flatness was mostly one accident — a fatal September mud rush that halted the giant Grasberg mine and took Indonesia down 300,000 tons, nearly made back by gains in Congo, Russia and Zambia. Our marathon metronome plays this elastic in the opposite direction, melting lumpy decades into a smooth staircase; here the same trick stretches five years into an era. The tell is identical in both: read the tick labels and ask whether equal gaps hold equal time. 1900, 1950, 2000, 2020, 2021 — spaced perfectly evenly. 03The fix

Give every year the same width — the one thing an x-axis owes its readers — and the century tells a steadier, more interesting story. On a true calendar the line climbs from 0.5 to 23 million tons with real scars along the way: a post-WWI slump that cut output 42% in a year, a Depression that halved it, and a 2016–19 lull that the doom chart’s spacing hid inside its ascent. The “wall” shrinks to a sliver — 5 of 125 years, 4% of the axis — and stops being a wall at all: 2020–25 grew 12%, beating the five years before it. What an honest axis does reveal is a slow easing, from roughly 3.3% a year across the 20th century to about 2.2% since 2000 — declining ore grades and decade-long mine builds are real, but they are a gradient, not a cliff, and no single year can diagnose them: 2025’s zero is one mudslide at one mine, weather rather than geology, and the year’s record $4.80 average copper price traces, in USGS’s own telling, to tariff uncertainty rather than exhaustion. As for the mountain running out of up: humanity had mined about 600 million tons of copper in all of history through 2015, while current USGS reserves alone hold 980 million tons and the estimated undiscovered remainder is 3.5 billion — though reserves are an economic inventory that grows with prices and drilling, not the planet’s last word, which is exactly the kind of caveat an honest chart can afford to print. The tell generalizes beyond time: whenever an axis changes gear mid-chart — decades between ticks on the left, single years on the right — every slope on the page is fiction, and the dramatic “trend break” will sit precisely where the gears shift.
